Pilot Italia supports the restoration of the frame of Andrea Mantegna’s Pala Trivulzio
Milan is an integral part of our family and corporate history. This is why we have chosen to support the restoration of the frame of Madonna with Child and Saints, known as Pala Trivulzio by Andrea Mantegna, housed in the Castello Sforzesco in Milan. This project represents a tangible commitment to preserving cultural heritage and contributing to the enhancement of art within our community.
Pilot Italia, in collaboration with the Associazione Sala delle Asse, embarks on its second journey into the restoration of world-renowned artistic masterpieces. After contributing to the restoration of Leonardo da Vinci’s Sala delle Asse, we are now supporting the recovery of the monumental frame of the Pala Trivulzio, which had been kept in storage at the Castello Sforzesco for decades. This restoration will restore Mantegna’s work to its deserved prominence, reinstating its original monumentality and perspective.
The Pala Trivulzio, painted in 1497 by the great Renaissance master Andrea Mantegna, is a large wooden panel (287×214 cm) housed in the Pinacoteca of the Castello Sforzesco. Originally created for the main altar of the Church of Santa Maria in Organo in Verona, it depicts the Virgin and Child, surrounded by cherub angels and saints John the Baptist, Gregory the Great, Benedict, and Jerome. Mantegna designed the work with an innovative ‘low viewpoint’ perspective, meant to align with its elevated position on the altar and framed by an intricately carved structure.
While the original 15th-century frame has been lost, an imposing 18th-century carved, painted, and gilded wooden frame remains. This frame accompanied the painting until 1954, when it was removed during the museum reorganization led by the BBPR architectural group. With our support, this historic frame has been restored, restoring Mantegna’s work to its full grandeur.
